Europa macht dicht. Und zwar nicht nur, wenn es um Geflüchtete geht, die gegenwärtige Stimmung in Europa ist von politischer und geistiger Abschottung nach innen und außen geprägt. Darum muss die EU entweder demokratisiert werden – oder sie wird zerfallen. Das ist zumindest das Leitmotiv der Initiative DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement), die vom ehemaligen griechischen Finanzminister Yanis Varoufakis gemeinsam mit zahlreichen europäischen Politikern, Aktivisten und Intellektuellen gegründet wurde. DiEM25 will dem skandalösen Umgang mit Geflüchteten in allen Ländern Europas, dem verbreiteten Erstarken neuer und alter Nationalismen und der vermeintlich alternativlosen neo-ordo-liberalen Wirtschaftspolitik die Vision eines anderen Europa gegenüberstellen: Ein Europa, das auf Demokratie, Gerechtigkeit und Menschenrechte setzt, das sich an den Bedürfnissen der Menschen und nicht an Wünschen des Kapitals orientiert und das sich der historischen Leistung der EU bewusst ist, Frieden auf einen über Jahrhunderte von Kriegen heimgesuchten Kontinent gebracht zu haben.
Nachdem DiEM25 bereits in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern vorgestellt wurde, präsentieren Yanis Varoufakis, Saskia Sassen, Srećko Horvat, Fanny Müller-Uri, Erich Fenninger, Teresa Forcades, Sandro Mezzadra, Walter Baier, Katja Kipping und weitere prominente Vortragende die neue Bewegung. Aus aktuellem Anlass wird der thematische Fokus im WERK X auf dem Umgang Europas mit Geflüchteten und auf den Themen Flucht und Migration liegen.
Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt.

Europe closes down. Not only with regard to flight, migration and refugees, the current atmosphere in Europe is characterized by political and intellectual bigotry and self-imposed isolation. Hence, „the European Union will either be democratised or it will disintegrate“, to quote the recurring theme of the Democracy in Europe Movement (DiEM25), recently founded by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and numerous European politicians, intellectuals and activists. DiEM25 rejects the scandalous treatment of refugees in all European countries, the wide-spread strengthening of new and old nationalism, and the neo-ordoliberal economic policies, for which there supposedly is no alternative. Instead, DiEM25 promotes the vision of a different Europe: a Europe that defends democracy, justice and human rights, a Europe that puts the needs of the people over the wishes of banks and corporations, and a Europe that is fully aware of the EU's great historical achievement of bringing peace to a continent that had been haunted by war and destruction for centuries.
After DiEM25 had already been presented in Berlin and Rome, the event in Vienna will focus on flight and migration and the so-called "refugee crisis" in Europe. Contributors will be Yanis Varoufakis, Saskia Sassen, Srećko Horvat, Fanny Müller-Uri, Erich Fenninger, Teresa Forcades, Sandro Mezzadra, Walter Baier and Katja Kipping, among others.
The event will be held in English.
